The Importance of Regular Professional Dental Cleans

Many patients have excellent oral hygiene – brushing twice a day with a fluoridated toothpaste, and flossing before brushing daily. However, everyone (even dentists!) still require professional dental cleaning every 3-12 months.
Professional cleaning can remove calculus – a mineralized deposit – that builds up on teeth, no matter how great our oral hygiene is! Calculus builds at different rates for different people. If left on the teeth for too long, calculus can lead to the development of Periodontal (gum) Disease.
Periodontal disease is influenced by multiple other systemic or lifestyle factors and so, professional cleaning at the dentist may be required more or less often depending on these factors. Some of the influential factors are smoking, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and level of oral hygiene.
