Having a toothache is always unpleasant. Normally it happens when you have a lot of other things on your plate. A lot of things can cause a toothache, but the most common cause is tooth decay. Tooth decay is caused by bacteria. Tooth decay normally starts out as sensitivity to cold or sweet things – normally a couple of seconds of pain that goes away as soon as the source is removed. At this stage, a filling can help treat the sensitivity.

As the decay gets worse, the pain can get worse or last longer. Once the bacteria reach the nerve of the tooth, the tooth starts to ache. When this occurs, a filling will not help – if anything it would make it worse. Instead, the tooth either needs to come out, or have a root canal. If the tooth is left in place, the bacteria can spread from the nerve of the tooth to the bone surrounding the root of the tooth causing an abscess which looks a bit like pimple on the gum.  If the infection is left untreated it can cause the tooth to feel loose or it can spread to other parts of the body.
